The Challenge
Great Storage. Wrong Budget.
The Problem
A regional government agency loved the performance and reliability of their IBM FlashSystem storage array — but when it came time to refresh their virtualization layer, the cost of IBM's full software stack (IBM Fusion) was out of reach for their annual budget cycle.
The Constraint
Leadership approved Proxmox VE — a free, open-source virtualization platform — as the alternative. One problem: IBM had not yet officially qualified or supported Proxmox with FlashSystem. There was no proven path forward.
The Approach
Don't Wait. Prove It.
Rather than stall the project waiting on vendor documentation, the IT Outlet engineering team took matters into their own hands. Using their own in-house IBM FS5200 FlashSystem array and a dedicated test server, they built a full internal proof of concept — connecting Proxmox to IBM FlashSystem storage via iSCSI with multipath I/O (MPIO).
Simultaneously, the IT Outlet account team worked directly with IBM's storage engineering and sales specialists to formally escalate support for this configuration, helping accelerate IBM's internal qualification process.
